Prepare Your Spreadsheet For Upload
Before uploading your contact list into Happy Grasshopper, it’s important to properly format your spreadsheet. A clean and well-structured file ensures that your contact data maps correctly and powers features like email outreach, SMS, handwritten cards, and automation.
✅ Spreadsheet Setup: The Basics
Each piece of contact information should be in its own column. This allows the system to accurately map fields like:
Column Header |
Example Entry |
---|---|
First Name | Jane |
Last Name | Doe |
[email protected] | |
Phone Number | (123) 456-7890 |
Address | 123 Elm St |
Date of Birth | 1985-06-22 |
Transaction Date | 2023-09-15 |
You can add as many fields as you like — just make sure they’re clearly labeled in separate columns.
📧 The Most Important Field:
Email Address
An email address is required for each contact to be imported.
- If a row doesn’t include an email address, that contact will not be uploaded.
- Make sure there are no typos, and each email is unique and valid.
📱 Other Highly Recommended Fields
Mobile Phone Number
- Used for sending text messages and voicemail drops.
- Make sure to use the best number you have on file.
Mailing Address
- Required for handwritten cards and artisan gifts.
- Include full address (street, city, state, ZIP).
Date of Birth
- Optional, but recommended.
🎉 Happy Grasshopper will send birthday wishes automatically.
Transaction Date
- Also optional, but great for sending anniversary follow-ups.
⏰ Why Dates Matter
When you include birthdays or transaction dates:
- Happy Grasshopper will automatically send celebration messages.
- You’ll also see a reminder on your dashboard for any upcoming events in the next 30 days — perfect for planning a personal touch.
🧼 Pro Tips for Smooth Uploads
- Make sure your file is saved as a .CSV (Comma Separated Values)
- Use clean formatting — no merged cells or hidden rows
- Avoid duplicate email addresses
- Don’t worry about extra blank columns — we’ll only import what’s mapped
🚀 What Happens Next?
Once uploaded:
- You’ll be able to map each column to the appropriate contact field
- Contacts without email addresses will be skipped
- All valid contacts will show up in your All Contacts tab, ready to tag, assign to an audience, or drop into an automation
