Bulk Upload Your Contacts
Whether you’re brand new or adding to an existing list, bulk uploading contacts is a core feature of every Happy Grasshopper account. With the right spreadsheet setup, you can get your database organized and ready to message in minutes.
🗂 Step 1: Prepare Your Spreadsheet
Before uploading, make sure your spreadsheet is:
- Properly formatted with one piece of info per column
- Saved as a .CSV file
At minimum, your spreadsheet should include:
- Email address (required)
- First and last name
- Phone number (for SMS & voicemail)
- Mailing address (for handwritten cards)
- Tags and/or audience (optional but powerful)
📍 Step 2: Navigate to Bulk Upload
- Click Contacts in the left-hand sidebar
- On the Contacts page, click the More button (top right)
- Select Bulk Upload
📤 Step 3: Upload Your File
- Click to select your file from your device
- Once uploaded, click Next Step
Happy Grasshopper will attempt to auto-map your spreadsheet columns (e.g., email → email, phone → phone).
🧩 Step 4: Map Your Data
Use this screen to confirm or adjust the field mappings:
- Match Email, Phone, First Name, Last Name, etc.
- If uploading addresses, toggle the switch to Yes, and map:
- Street
- City
- State
- Postal Code
🏷 Optional: Add Tags or Audiences
You can define tags and audiences in two ways:
Method 1: In Your Spreadsheet
- Add a Tags column and/or Audience column
- System will apply them automatically during upload
Method 2: Manually During Upload
- Toggle “Use tags/audiences from spreadsheet?” to No
- Choose a single audience or tag manually (e.g., “Past Clients”)
💡 Tip: Use Method 1 for mixed lists. Use Method 2 for uniform lists (like “Open House Leads”).
🔁 Step 5: Configure Final Settings
These settings ensure your data stays clean and up-to-date:

✅ Your contacts will update if:
- Tags are added
- Audiences are changed
- Phone numbers are revised
…as long as the email address remains the same.
🚀 Step 6: Submit Your Upload
- Click Next Step
- Review how many contacts will be imported
- Click Submit Upload
You’ll see your import listed at the top of the uploads list:
- Status will show as “Pending” or “Processing”
- Click the refresh icon to track progress
- Once done, your contacts will appear in your list — with tags, audiences, and editable fields
❓Troubleshooting Tips
- Double check that every contact has a valid email
- Avoid merged cells or hidden rows in your spreadsheet
- Use clear headers (e.g., “Email”, “Phone”, “Tags”, “Audience”)
- Contact us if something looks off!
